Acorn 0.3 Released!!
Worldforge is proud to announce the release of Acorn 0.3! This release features some dramatic changes and enhancements from our previous release. If you're interested in playing Acorn or hosting an Acorn server you should read the introductory Acorn page, download the client and or server, read the player's guide to find out how to play and see some nice screenshots, check our list of running servers and most of all have fun!
Major new additions to Acorn include:
- Major improvements to server performance and stability with a complete rewrite of the server in C++
- New artwork including a beautiful new map with completey new graphics and tiles
- A new ability to re-connect to an existing character allowing the same game to be resumed
- A rewrite of the whole network and protocol system to use the latest version of the protocol library Atlas-C++.
- Inclusion of a Uclient port (Acorn's 2d isometric client) to Windows. Now Windows users can herd little piggies too!
Acorn is the second in a series of games created as part of the WorldForge bootstrapping endeavour, aimed at creating an engine for massively multiplayer online games. The previous demo featured skeletons moving across crude maps. Acorn builds on this by incorporating a Python-scripted, event-driven rule system, a client/server architecture using the Atlas Protocol System, goal-motivated artificial intelligence, herding behavior and nutrient-based growth simulation, sound detection and automated reaction, and a richer collection of artwork, sound effects, and music.
